Own a piece of history - Chambers Island is a 118-acre island on the Gulf of Mexico, at the mouth of the Withlacoochee River. Once home to Port Inglis, the largest phosphate port in America just prior to WW I, this island is ready to become your very own Nature Coast retreat! At Chambers Island, the original Withlacoochee River channel turns south, running along the east side of the island before turning southwest through "Bungalow Pass" and into the Gulf. The north side of the island is bounded by the dredged and marked navigation channel that most boaters would consider the actual Withlacoochee River. Unlike most other islands of this type, Chambers Island was previously developed, with dredged boat slips, access channels, homes, and other port amenities. No structures remain on the island, but eight separate upland areas, with elevations as high as 25 feet, still show the remains of this development, mostly as foundations, cisterns, slips, and various implements. An elevated walkway/bridge was constructed by the owners in 2008 to facilitate the movement of people and materials from dockage on the north side to the higher elevations of the center island.
